REFLECTIVE JOURNAL EDU 702 SEMESTER 1 JAN – APR 2011

On the very first day, our professor Dr Izaham Shah told us regarding the course content and the ongoing assessment, grading policy ( must at least get 65% (B) ).
1.       Presentation:   15%
2.       E-portfolio  :               10%
3.       Article review            15%
4.       Quizzes:                       25%
5.       Research proposal   35% ( chapter 1 – 3 )
For the presentation, students are asked to present ideas, opinions, thoughts, products, information, finding/results on their own .  Only 1 test towards the end of the class.  How to avoid plagiarism; must have citation, acknowledge, take careful notes where you get your information from, never copy other’s work and must inculcate good values in you.  Those are good advice from Dr Izaham on plagiarism. For the next class, every student must submit at least 3 topics for the proposal. 
I have submitted 2 topic also; 1) English International Reading programme 2) English language competence among security personnel at Faculty of Medicine UiTM ( which finally chosen as my proposal ).  For the class today, prof Izaham explained on the 1st chapter of the proposal ; identify the significant research problem, write research problem, conduct pilot study , communicate researcher’s intention and make clear purpose of the study.  Now , Prof. Izaham explained on the Education Research, what meant by Education Research, Prof. asked students what area we normally do need a research, I answered: A survey on students at religious school in speaking using English ( based to my experience teaching at the school in Klang during my practicum for TESL Degree last year ).  Then Prof Izaham continued with his explanations on the items for proposal:  Problems to be investigated, purpose of the study, justification of the study, research questions or hypothesis and definitions of terms by giving example what we meant by Intrinsic motivation ( if many definitions, take one that can suit our research ).
For next class, Prof will explain on research problems. Next class; Prof explained on the research problem – a set of conditions that need discussion, solution and information.  Implies the possibility of empirical investigation, i.e data collection analysis.  Finally posed as a question.
Dates for the group presentation: I am  in the forth group and  will present on Experimental research on Feb 2nd.  the lecture for the day was on quantitative and qualitative research.. we learned on the major differences between the two, the definitions etc.
Move on to the next class, Prof. Izaham taught us on Experimental research and its types, correlational research etc. 
On Feb 11th, every group presented their topic after the lecture by Prof. Dr. Izaham.
In a mean time, slowly but surely I able to create and upload materials using my own blog:

On Feb 25th, we learned on sampling – random and non-random, stratified sampling, cluster sampling, symtematic sampling, convinence sampling and purposive sampling.
We continued with the lecture as usual and on April 8th we sat for one quiz and presented our proposal.  My topic is on English language competence among security personnel and Alhamdulillah, Dr Izaham gave some comments on the part of how to measure competence and I went back  home and search for the communicative competence measurement through websites. 
On the Apr 15th I able to finished my write up on proposal and sent it to Dr Izaham’s office in Fakulti Pendidikan UiTM Sek, 17 Shah Alam.
